Not to be confused with magnification, microscope resolution is the shortest distance between two separate points in a microscope's field of view that can still be distinguished as distinct entities. The working distance is the distance between the objective and the cover glass, or between the objective and the top (or bottom) of whatever vessel you are imaging through, when your sample is in focus. A telescope must gather large amounts of light from a dim, distant object; therefore, it needs a large objective lens to gather as much light as possible and bring it to a bright focus.
